Picture the Music

The 18th Annual Awards Ceremony for the Picture the Music Art Competition was held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Powell Symphony Hall.  Thank you to the Energizer Charitable Trust for sponsoring this year’s program.  We were pleased to have Ron Klemm, Operations Manager for CLASSIC 99 – KFUO-FM, return as Master of Ceremonies.  Buron Buffkin, Chairman of the Energizer Charitable Trust, and Deborah Bloom, violinist from the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, presented the awards. 

This year, 23,370 students from 125 schools were inspired by the music of Manuel de Falla’s, Ritual Fire Dance, to create their artwork.  Bryce Meyer, kindergarten student from Washington West Elementary School in Washington, MO, was the Maestro Award Winner for students from kindergarten through third grade and Katia Lima, a fifth grader from Gateway Elementary School in St Louis, MO, won the Maestro Award for students in grades four through six. 

The Picture the Music Art Exhibit can be viewed at the Schlafly Branch Library from March 11 through March 20; at Mid-Rivers Mall from March 21 through March 30; Plaza Frontenac from March 31 through April 10; and at the South County Mall from May 1 through May 12.   

This year’s judges were: Ms. Kathryn Adamchick, Director of Education, Contemporary Art Museum; Mr. Ron Klemm, Operations Manager, Classic 99 KFUO-FM; Dr. Louis Lankford, Des Lee Chair, Department of Education University of Missouri-St. Louis; Ms. Lois Rufer, Supervisor of Apprentice Teachers at the University of Missouri St. Louis and Fontbonne University and Mr. Solomon Thurman, Free-Lance Artist and Art Instructor.
