For those of you reading somewhere other than St. Louis, we citizens in the Lou are anticipating a nasty bit of winter on this last day of November – it’s already getting icy, I hear, to the west and north of the city, with predictions of five to eight inches of snow tonight.
Alas, tonight’s concert has been cancelled due to what most suspect to become hazardous conditions by nightfall. Those of you with tickets can exchange them for any upcoming concert throughout the season – but I encourage you to come this Friday or Saturday night. As I am writing this, Kyoko Takezawa is in final rehearsal of the Szymanowski Violin Concerto No. 2 and she sounds totally captivating. The piece is engrossing, with moments of virtuosic fire, as well as rich passages in which you can hear a passionate violin mind at work. The Brahms First Symphony isn’t too shabby either.
And I just have to say, as one who grew up in the north country, as one who attended a high school in north central Montana that cancelled only one day during my four years – I went to school one morning when it was 60 below! – well, I’ll stop now because I am starting to sound like my father retelling his four mile walk to school (five miles back) through blizzards back in the day.
