Looking Back, Looking Ahead

|

An SLSO staffer reminded me: "Dohnanyi inherited a pretty good band," which takes us back to George Szell, who made his U.S. conducting debut with the SLSO before taking the Cleveland Orchestra to the top-rank status that preceded the top-rank status it achieved with Dohnanyi.

Meanwhile, the Gipsy Kings have arrived and have overtaken the hall. They play tonight (Friday) and tickets are available. Click here to find a very soulful audio clip.

The Innsbrook Festival gets started tonight as well. SLSO Concertmaster David Halen serves at artistic director for Innsbrook. Click here to learn about two weeks of great music in the middle of MO.

And OTSL continues this weekend with Salome tonight (Friday), La bohème Saturday, and the opening night of Il Re Pastore Sunday. SLSO violinist Nicolae Bica is in the pit for the Mozart, and told me "See it. It's beautiful."
