Des Lee

|

E. Desmond Lee passed away early Tuesday morning. For those of you outside of St. Louis, Des Lee was one of the great philanthropists of our city. He was a dear friend to the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, but then, anyone who ever came in contact with Des went away feeling he or she had just made a dear friend.

I had the privilege of spending time with Des on a number of occasions. Most recently he took my hand to help him walk across the Coronado Ballroom during the Gala event. Then, as always, I reminded him who I was. And, as always, he said that he remembered me. I mentioned a mutual friend, and Des gleamed on hearing the name, then made a remark about our friend that was ribald and sweet at the same time. Once I'd connected Des back to his beloved wife, Mary Ann, he was ready to party.

Des was delightfully cantankerous, loved life, loved the SLSO. He always spoke of his own accomplishments with humility bordering on self-effacement. The musicians were great artists, while in his mind all he did was figure out how to make metal hangers (Lee-Rowan Co. produced products such as hangers and wire shelving). But he was a pretty good drummer too.

When Des sold his company he began giving his wealth away. He told me, I think he told anybody who would listen, that giving gave him the greatest joy of his life. He gave in ways that truly benefited, creating bridges between institutions and people. He gave, in part, as an example for others of great fortune to give, and he was bewildered when he perceived a lack of charity in others.

Des loved to play the down-home Missourian, a kind of country bumpkin among the cultured classes. This was mostly a pose; he was much more than the persona he took on. He was wily, and he was cultivated. He was coarse, and he was sophisticated. He was fun-loving, and he was resolute of purpose. He looked for the good

in people, and he gave so that people would find the good in themselves.
