Mussorgsky/Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition (selections)
The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky visited an exhibition of paintings and was inspired to translate the paintings he had seen into sound. He wrote Pictures at an Exhibition for piano. Later, the French composer Maurice Ravel added to Mussorgsky’s work to make it a composition for full orchestra. Both composers combined their senses—seeing and hearing—to create works of art. Can we see sound? Can we hear images?

Music and History
Connections
The SLSO and the Missouri History Museum come
together
to offer an educational experience that draws connections
between music and history. In
“True and Amazing Tales” (with the November 2007 Concerts)
students become a part of
true life tales of historic characters, and then invent
their own tales of adventure. In “New
Worlds of Discovery” (with the January 2008 Concerts)
students explore the captivating,
dynamic changes that reverberated around the world in the
17th and 18th centuries, and
then create an artifact. Each program offers an educational
experience that combines a
tour with discussion and writing activities.
