The Symphony's best-known educational programs are its three series of
educational concerts in Powell Symphony Hall, which serve approximately 40,000
students from 1000 schools annually. They come from public, private, parochial
and home schools representing all economic backgrounds. Kinder Konzerts (grades
K-3), Young People's Concerts (grades 4-6), and Young Adult Concerts (grades 7
and above) are tailored for separate age groups ranging from kindergarten
through high school.
Kinder Konzerts, Young People's Concerts, and Young Adult Concerts include
commentary from the stage highlighting various aspects of music, including
melody, rhythm, and the different instruments within the orchestra. These
popular concerts have entertained St. Louis-area residents for generations:
Maestro Rudolph Ganz led the first Young Peoples Concerts in 1921; the Kinder
Konzerts began in 1966 under the auspices of the Symphony Women's Association.

E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative
In addition to educating and entertaining youngsters at Powell Symphony
Hall, the musicians make over 150 visits to local schools each season. Half of
these visits occur through the E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative,
a partnership with the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), local arts
organizations, and over 120 schools in 14 districts.
Any school may request a visit from SLSO musicians. They do not need to be part
of the E. Desmond Lee Collaborative. For more information, please contact the
Education Programs Manager in the Community Partnerships Department at
314-286-4434.
