
Stephen Lange joined the St. Louis Symphony as Assistant Principal Trombone in September 2000, and has been the Principal Trombone in the Colorado Music Festival since 2005. Before joining the SLSO, Mr. Lange performed one season as Assistant Principal/Second Trombone with the San Antonio Symphony. Mr. Lange has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Kennedy Opera House Orchestra. In May 1999, Mr. Lange completed Juilliard’s Master of Music program as a student of Joesph Alessi. During his stay at Juilliard he performed the U.S. premiere of Ruben Seroussi’s trombone concerto, Playtime,with the New Juilliard Ensemble. As a recipient of the Frank Smith Memorial Scholarship, Mr. Lange performed Nino Rota’s Concerto for Trombone at the 1998 International Trombone Festival in Boulder, Colorado. Mr. Lange is credited with formation of the Juilliard Trombone Ensemble, which won the Emory Remington Trombone Choir Competition in its first year of existence, resulting in a performance at the 1998 International Trombone Festival.
Mr. Lange holds bachelor’s degrees of science and music from Indiana University, where he was awarded Indiana University’s Performer’s Certificate. Other awards received by Mr. Lange include First Prize in the Lewis Van Haney International Trombone Competition at the International Trombone Festival in Las Vegas. Mr. Lange is an original member of the Extension Ensemble, a brass quintet that won first place at the 1999 Carmel Chamber Competition and the 1999 Fishoff Chamber Competition. Mr. Lange’s former teachers are Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic, Keith Brown, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, and Joe Dixon, instructor of trombone in the Dallas area. Stephen Lange is on faculty at Washington University in St. Louis.
