The 20th Annual Awards Ceremony for Picture the Music was held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Powell Hall. We were very pleased to welcome back Ron Klemm, Operations Manager for Classic 99 KFUO-FM as Master of Ceremonies. Ward Stare, Resident Conductor and Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, presented the awards. Fred Bronstein, President and Executive Director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and Jean Saunders, President of the Symphony Volunteer Association, welcomed the students, teachers and families to Powell Hall.
This year over 16,000 students from 85 schools were inspired by the music of Richard Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger to create their artwork. The Maestro Award Winner for students from kindergarten to Grade 3 was Zyericka Higgins, a 3rd grade student from Cool Valley Elementary School, Ferguson-Florissant School District R-II. The Maestro Award Winner for Grades 4 through 6 was Brendan Ball, a 4th grade student at Rock Creek Elementary School in the Fort Zumwalt R-II School District.
The entire Picture the Music exhibit is on display at Powell Hall until March 7, and then can be viewed over the next few weeks at the following locations: Schlafly Branch Library, March 8-March 16; Plaza Frontenac, March 17-March 26; the Living World at the Saint Louis Zoo, March 26-April 7; and The Magic House, April 7-April 19.
The Judges for the 2010 Competition were: Lisa Harper Chang, Community Projects Director for The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts; Courtney Henson, Visitor Services Manager for The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts; Ron Klemm, Operations Manager, Classic 99 KFUO-FM; Debbie McConnell, Retired Art Teacher, Parkway School District; and Solomon Thurman, Freelance Artist and Mural Artist.
