SAINT LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES PROGRAM CHANGE FOR MARCH CONCERTS
World Premiere of John Adams Doctor Atomic Symphony ST. LOUIS, January 25, 2007 --The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) announced today a program change for concerts scheduled on March 16, 17 & 18, 2007 at Powell Symphony Hall. The previously scheduled world premier performance of John Adams’ Doctor Atomic Symphony has now been rescheduled for the 2007-08 season. The SLSO, Carnegie Hall and the BBC are Co-Commissioners of the piece. The Carnegie Hall program on March 31, 2007 with the SLSO has also been changed to reflect the rescheduling. “I realized while working in earnest on composing the Doctor Atomic Symphony that the process of developing a symphony based on music drawn from the opera Doctor Atomic was creatively a much more time-consuming project than originally anticipated, and it would not be ready for the scheduled premiere,” said composer John Adams. Music Director David Robertson added, "When we commission, we do so based on a commitment to the composer. Having worked with many composers in my career I'm most interested in ensuring that the composer has the time needed to produce the work that realizes their creative vision for the work - and a great work from John Adams is certainly worth the wait." For the March 16 and 18 concerts at Powell Symphony Hall and the March 31 performance at Carnegie Hall, John Adam’s Harmonielehre, which was performed in David Robertson's inaugural programs as Music Director of the SLSO, will replace Doctor Atomic Symphony on the program. For the March 17 concert at Powell, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathetique” will comprise the second half of the program. The remaining program’s conductor and guest artists remain unchanged. For SLSO patrons who have already purchased tickets for the performances in Powell, you may use the tickets as scheduled, exchange your tickets for another concert or request a refund. For additional information on tickets, call 314-534-1700. Program Details *March 16 – MAHLER: Adagio from Symphony No. 10, BRITTEN: Les Illuminations (with Dawn Upshaw) and John ADAMS Harmonielehre.
