SAINT LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND

PULITZER FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS PRESENT SECOND PERFORMANCE IN CONCERT SERIES

Steve Reich program, performed in the company of the composer

ST. LOUIS, March 28, 2005 – The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts continue their ongoing chamber music series on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 8:00pm (doors open at 7:30).  In this series, SLSO Music Director Designate David Robertson and the musicians introduce and play contemporary chamber works in the inspiring venue of the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts (3716 Washington Blvd.).

The concert will feature the music of Steve Reich and will be performed within the architectural setting of Tadao Ando’s great structure, and in the company of the Pulitzer’s current exhibition, Brancusi and Serra in Dialogue.  Dealing with the nature of sculpture, this exhibition highlights two significant artists:  Constantin Brancusi and Richard Serra.  The juxtaposition of the works sets up a dialogue, not only between the works of the two artists, but also with the surrounding architecture of the Pulitzer building.  It is a compelling environment in which to explore Reich’s absorbing, challenging, and beautiful music.

It is hard to believe that the radical of 1960s minimalism is now near 70, yet Reich continues to create some of the most intriguing music of this new century. The Village Voice has called him “America’s greatest living composer”; The New Yorker deemed him “the most original musical thinker of our time”; The New York Times has said Reich is “among the great composers of the century.” Visit www.stevereich.com to find valuable information about the composer.

To be performed April 7 at the Pulitzer: Piano Phase (1967), Music for Pieces of Wood (1973) and Eight Lines (1983). David Robertson will be speaking and conducting, and Steve Reich will be in attendance.

Tickets are available through the Powell Symphony Hall box office at 314-534-1700 or through the website (order online). Tickets for the event are $20.00.  Limited availability due to venue size (100 tickets). Visit www.pulitzerarts.org for more information on the exhibition and concert series.
