SAINT LOUIS ZOO, ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP

ST. LOUIS—Two of the St. Louis area’s most beloved institutions--the Saint Louis Zoo and the St. Louis Symphony--have announced an exciting new partnership that will feature concerts and activities both at the Zoo and Powell Hall.

The collaboration kicks off with a special family-friendly performance at the Saint Louis Zoo on Saturday, September 6 at 2pm during the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Just Like You at the Zoo event.  The concert, part of the Symphony’s Landmarks Series, will include a St. Louis Symphony brass quintet playing a selection of music written about and based on animals.   It takes place in Schnuck Family Plaza in the center of the Zoo.

In October, the fun comes to Powell Hall.  The Saint Louis Zoo and the Symphony will team up for Education Concerts (October 28-29) and a Family Concert (October 26) based on the John Lithgow book “Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo.”  Young audiences will have the chance to create animal masks, take turns playing animal-themed musical instruments and check out various bio-facts curated by Zoo staff specifically for the performances.  A Zoo representative will join St. Louis Symphony Resident Conductor Steven Jarvi to co-host the concerts, further emphasizing the connections between the music selections, which will include Saint-Säens playful Carnival of the Animals, and current Zoo attractions and animal habitats.   At the Family Concert, special Zoo-themed concessions will be offered including cotton candy, popcorn, animal crackers and Flamingo Aid (pink lemonade).

Teachers interested in bringing their classes to Powell Hall for the education concerts taking place on October 28-29 should call Mary Brown at 314-286-4156 or email marybr@stlsymphony.org.  Tickets also remain for the Sunday, October 26 Family Concert.  They may be purchased on-line at stlsymphony.org, by calling 314-534-1700 or in person at the Powell Hall Box Office, 718 North Grand Boulevard.
