In concerts January 7-8, Music Director Stéphane Denève leads the SLSO in Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 1. The symphony, one of Brahms' most beloved compositions, took more than two decades to compose before its 1876 premiere. The concert opens with an ode to Brahms in German composer Detlev Glanert's Brahms-Fantasie, the first SLSO performance of the piece. Denève describes Glanert as among "the best living German composers." The SLSO previously gave the U.S. premiere of Glanert's Frenesia in April 2015. Shai Wosner, the acclaimed pianist known for his broad repertoire, makes his SLSO debut in these concerts, in Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. Lars Vogt, who was originally scheduled to perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 on this program, is unable to travel to St. Louis.

In concerts January 15-16, Denève and the orchestra are joined by German violinist Augustin Hadelich in his fifth collaboration with the SLSO in performances of Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. Hadelich won the 2016 Best Classical Instrumental Solo GRAMMY Award® for his performance of Henri Dutilleux's Violin Concerto. He is nominated for the 2022 Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his recordings of Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach. Opening the concert is Valerie Coleman's Umoja: Anthem of Unity. The SLSO's performance of Umoja: Anthem of Unity marks the first orchestral performance of music by Coleman. Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite closes the program.

Prior to the January 15-16 concerts at Powell Hall, the orchestra, Denève, and Hadelich give the same program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Lied Center for Performing Arts on January 13. This performance is at least the sixth SLSO performance in Lincoln since 1991, including the most recent concert with Denève and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in September 2019 and a standing-room-only 2018 collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre in performances of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird with dancer Misty Copeland.

Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is required for all audience members 12 and older at every Powell Hall event.  All patrons are required to wear masks while inside Powell Hall. Visit slso.org/protocols for more information.
