Symphony In Your School, Junior

Symphony In Your School, Junior is a free residency engaging early childhood students (ages 3-6) and teachers in orchestral music with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Early childhood educators attend a Professional Development Workshop to equip them with the knowledge and tools to engage their students musically on a daily basis. The SLSO Education Team collaborates with teachers to implement interactive and engaging lessons with an emphasis on creating and exploring music through the framework of current early childhood curricula including literacy skills, physical development, and social and emotional development.

SIYS Jr In-School Musician VisitLessons incorporate music – including instruments and singing, elements of movement and dance, and active listening – through hands-on activities and play-related songs and games. Students experience live music performed by world-class musicians in their own classroom and at a Tiny Tunes Concert in historic Powell Hall. Through the Symphony In Your School, Junior partnership, teachers and students discover and connect with orchestral music by creating, performing, and responding to music together.

What if our school goes virtual?

The SLSO understands that due to COVID-19 the 2020-2021 school year will be different for each school, and circumstances may change throughout the year. The safety of teachers, students, and SLSO musicians and staff is our top priority. While we’d like Symphony In Your School, Jr. to be delivered as an in-person residency starting January 2021, we know the uncertainty of this coming school year may not allow us to do so. Our intent is to move forward with the application process as we have in the past. Teachers will be notified of their acceptance in mid-October, after which we will work with each teacher individually to adapt and modify programming to the best of our ability to meet the needs of our partner teachers and their students. If you have any questions regarding the application process, please email sarahr@slso.org.
