Symphony in Your School, Elementary

Imagine your students debut performance with musicians of the SLSO. Now you can make it a reality! Symphony in Your School, Elementary (SIYS) is a FREE residency engaging students, grades 1-3, in music making with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Timeline

  • Applications for the following school year are accepted mid-January through early April.
  • Application Deadline is April 6.
  • Acceptance notifications go out in late April.  
  • Orff Schulwerk Level 1 scholarship recipient registration deadline is May 15.
  • Required SIYS, Elementary Professional Development Workshop will be held in mid/late August.
  • Fall residencies will begin in late September.
  • Spring residencies will begin in late January. 

Overview

Educator Professional Development WorkshopParticipate in a professional development workshop introducing the SIYS, Elementary in-school curriculum. 

Students In School Working on Xylophone Parts Integrate the SIYS, Elementary Curriculum into your classroom (minimum of five class periods required). 

SLSO Musicians In School
 Receive three interactive musician presentations in your classroom introducing students to the instrument families and reinforcing other concepts from the SIYS, Elementary Curriculum

Instrument Playground Receive an in-school visit from the Instrument Playground. Instrument Playground provides a hands-on experience playing the instruments in the orchestra.

Education Concert AudienceBring your students to Powell Hall for an SLSO Education Concert experience. This opportunity continues the SIYS, Elementary Curriculum outside the classroom and into the community. Check here for a full list of Education Concert opportunities. Limited financial assistance is available to help offset costs. 

SIYS, Elementary Final Performance
After the final teacher taught lesson, a trio of SLSO musicians join the students for a dress rehearsal and the final performance.

Orff Schulwerk Level I Certification Scholarship Now Available!

We are excited to announce a new partnership with STUDIO 49 Orff Instruments and Music is Elementary! Compliments of STUDIO 49 Orff Instruments, one Symphony in Your School, Elementary partner teacher will receive a scholarship to attend the Orff Schulwerk Level I Certification Workshop at the University of Missouri - St. Louis this summer (June 2018). In addition, Music is Elementary will donate all required class materials for the scholarship recipient. When music teachers apply for Symphony in Your School, Elementary they will have the option to apply for the scholarship as well.
