Symphony In Your School, Secondary

Curriculum Description
Symphony In Your School (SIYS), Secondary, a free residency program available for middle and high school bands and orchestras, provides music students the opportunity to interact with and learn from the world-class musicians of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Ensembles selected to participate in SIYS, Secondary will receive visits from SLSO musicians tailored to the specific needs of each ensemble. As a culmination of this program, we ask partnering teachers to bring their students on a field trip to an SLSO concert to experience their SLSO mentors perform live at Powell Hall.

Partnership Responsibilities
SLSO musician visits are provided free of charge to the school. In return, the participating teachers are expected to:

  • Communicate with SLSO staff in all phases of scheduling musician visits.
  • Prepare participating students for musician visits.
  • Organize field trip to attend a concert at Powell Hall.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must be a middle or high school band or orchestra teacher
  • Applicant must have taught at least one year in the school where the residency will take place
  • Participating school must be within a 30-mile radius from Powell Hall
  • Participating school must be within a 40-minute drive from Powell Hall
  • Participating ensemble must meet on Mondays or Tuesdays to coordinate musician visits
  • The residency is limited to one ensemble per applicant

Application Timeline

  • January 2019                      Application opens
  • March 31, 2019                 Application deadline
  • April & May, 2019             Site observations are granted to select applicants
  • June, 2019                           Application results are announced
