St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra Alumni

77/78 Youth Orchestra at Powell HallThe St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra has made a significant impact on the region’s student musicians for nearly half a century. The SLSYO is proud to boast over 2,000 members since it was founded in 1970 by Leonard Slatkin. Currently, six alumni are members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and many more have gone on to perform professionally with other major orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the San Antonio Symphony. In addition to performing, many of our alumni have gone on to become music educators, teaching at local school districts such as Rockwood, Webster, Kirkwood, Pattonville, Clayton, and Parkway, and other schools districts nationwide. Several alumni have also gone into arts administration in musical organizations such as the SLSO, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, the Santa Fe Opera, and many more.Slatkin working with musicians from the 74/75 Youth Orchestra

SLSYO members have gone on to study music at many of the nation’s top music schools such as Rice University, The Juilliard School, Yale University, Peabody Institute, Eastman, Indiana Univeristy - Bloomington, Northwestern University, Oberlin College, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory. Our members have also pursued careers outside of music, involving themselves in a wide variety of professions, everything from medicine to oceanography to law. Alumni who have not pursued music as a career have gone on to study at the nation’s top schools such as Harvard University, Yale University, Washington University in St. Louis, Cornell College, Princeton University, Columbia University, Stanford University, and many more.
