Julian Mitchell

Washington University

Julian Mitchell is an incoming freshman at Washington University. He is 18 and plays the trombone. Julian was selected as an Illinois All State Musician in 2020 and 2021. He has been playing the trombone since beginning band in the 5th grade in O’Fallon, Illinois. This is his third year auditioning and being selected for the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, and he is looking forward to having another great experience. Julian loved his high school band experience at O’Fallon Township High School, where he participated in the Midwest Clinic for International Band and Orchestra with his high school’s Wind Ensemble last December, performed for the Illinois All-State festival with his high school’s Jazz Band in January, and his high school Wind Ensemble received the Sudler Flag Award in May. In 2022, he got to experience marching in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena with his high school marching band. Julian participates in the Illinois Music Association Education All-District and All-State festivals annually and earned high rankings with his Solo and Ensemble performances. He also plays in the Highland Municipal Band occasionally.

Outside of music, Julian enjoys all trivia, math, and science. He loves animals, especially his two dogs and turtle. At WashU, he is looking forward to joining numerous extracurriculars and clubs, as well as pursue a major in Genetics to work towards becoming a Genetic Counselor.

Julian would like to thank Dr. Adam Kosberg, who he has studied under since the 6th grade, his high school band directors Dr. Melissa Gustafson-Hinds and Mr. Philip Carter who always encouraged him to be the best musician he can be and have given him plenty of opportunities to succeed, and his middle school band director who introduced him to the music program, Mr. Mark Donahue.
