Southeast Missouri State University

Kyle Shewcraft is a 20-year-old sophomore at Southeast Missouri State University. He is studying music education and plans to pressure a graduate degree in trombone performance. This is Kyle’s first year in the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. At SEMO he currently studies with Dr. Joseph L. Jefferson.

As a college freshman Kyle received honorable mention as a soloist in Missouri Music Teachers Association annual completion, and performed in a collegiate trombone quartet that took runner up in the Music Teachers National Association, Chamber Music Competition.

Kyle graduated from De Soto High School but began playing trombone during his time as a student at Festus Intermediate School. Kyle always loved music but never had the intentions of joining band until they brought his class into the band room at the end of his fifth grade year. He decided to sign up for band in and the rest was history. Kyle accredits a large majority of his success to his band director at De Soto High School Vincent Rapini. He showed Kyle that music was something that could be more that a hobby and he became Kyle’s first trombone teacher. Mr. Rapini taught Kyle that if he wanted success he had to work hard for it and earn it. Kyle was the first student in 29 years from De Soto to make the Missouri All State band.

Kyle is forever grateful for the impact that Dr. Robert Conger, his first teacher at Southeast Missouri State University and Gerry Pagano had on his playing. He would not be where he is now without these two gentlemen.

Kyle is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha National Fraternal Society of Music and is proud to call himself a Sinfonian.
