Mary Xu

Violin

Parkway Central High School

Mary Xu, fifteen years old, is currently a sophomore at Parkway Central High School and is in her fourth season with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and moved to St. Louis when she was five years old. She moved to Columbia, Missouri soon after, then moved back to St. Louis when she was seven.

She started studying the violin when she was seven with Maggie Kline and later with SLSO violinist Ling Ling Guan. Her current teacher is SLSO violinist Xiaoxiao Qiang. Her orchestra experiences include participating in the Young People’s Concert Orchestra at the Webster University Community Music School for two years, serving as co-concertmaster. She is the co-concertmaster for her middle school’s Honors Orchestra, which was selected to play at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference in Tan-Tar-A. She also participates in her school’s Chamber Orchestra. In high school, Mary played in the first violin section for the 2017 Missouri All-State Orchestra, under direction of Jeffrey Grogan. This year, she will be the second violin principal for her school symphonic orchestra.

Outside of violin, Mary is an avid reader, especially books about history. In her free time, she enjoys writing, dancing, and blogging. Mary would like to thank her parents for their strong support, her school teacher, Joseph Bradley, at Parkway Central High School, and her private teachers for inspiring and helping her grow as a musician.
