Walter Thomas-Patterson

Walter Thomas-Patterson

Oboe

O'Fallon Township High School

Walter Thomas-Patterson is a fifteen year-old freshman at O’Fallon Township High School in Illinois. After taking piano lessons for a number of years, he decided in sixth grade to begin studying the oboe with Dr. Melissa Gustafson-Hinds to prepare him to join his junior high band. For the past year and a half, he has also been studying oboe with Ann Homann-Mottl. This past school year, he joined the Community Music School of Webster University, where he plays piano. He was selected as an All-District Musician on oboe for the past three consecutive years, and on piano he has won the silver medal twice in the St. Louis Area Music Teachers Association Young Artists Competition. When he is not playing classical music, Walter enjoys composing, and this past year won a bronze medal in the Hal Leonard/Carol Klose Composition Competition. Beyond music and studying, he likes reading, hiking, traveling and playing with his two cats.

In addition to his oboe teachers, Walter would like to thank his family, Daniel Schene, Mary Anderson, Amy Jo Sawyer, and Vera Parkin for giving so much of their time, skill and knowledge to help him develop as a musician.
