News & Notes - November 2014
From the SVA President
The St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association Board has unanimously approved the selection of Marjie Smith for the position of Nominating Chair for 2015. Most of you know Marjie well and that she has a wealth of experience in our organization. Her most recent involvement has been as VP of Membership for two years under President Becky Brown and Chair of Gypsy Caravan for two years under President Jean Saunders.
Marjie is currently helping the Membership Committee with renewals—another very important assignment. Marjie and her husband Ken have opened their city home time and time again for important SVA functions. Marjie is well known by many members in the SVA because of all of her ongoing commitments, and she is very well qualified to serve as Nominating Chair. Thank you Marjie for once again saying, “Yes!” to the SVA.
All positions for the 2014/15 Board and Team Leaders are now filled. All necessary kick-off and training meetings have been held. Now it is time for our volunteers to chip in and help complete the work we have promised to do. The SVA works more and more frequently with the STL Symphony staff, and requests for assistance come in many different shapes and forms, and sometimes at the last minute. Try to save some room in your calendar or make some changes of plans, so the SVA can help the STL Symphony as needed and begin arranging for volunteers on our own SVA projects.
Regards,
Sara Fabick

P.S. Our beloved SVA Director Amee Colvin has left the building as of October 31. Amee has been doing double duty as part-time SVA Director and a professor for the St. Louis Community College system for the last several months, so she has been one busy person. Amee’s beautiful smile, big laugh, attention to detail, and invaluable memory will be sorely missed. SVA Directors are never, never forgotten because of the invaluable services they provide for the membership. Amee promises we will see her as a regular SVA volunteer when time permits in her busy family schedule. Thank you, Amee, for your support, friendship, and love. We will miss you.

Membership
Have you thought about asking your spouse, best friends, neighbors, community acquaintances, and fellow church members to join the SVA? The organization offers a wide variety of ways that volunteers can help. Sometimes people just need to be asked to join and they do—and new members often become the most active participants. Look around! Who could you ask to join the SVA?
If you did not receive your 2014-2015 Membership Directory at the Fall Membership Meeting, you can stop by the Powell Hall Boutique (open one hour before concerts and at intermission). Each SVA member is entitled to one copy.
As of September 1, 2014, the minimum Friends of the Symphony contribution to apply for SVA membership is $75.
Have you completed a 2014/15 Committee Sign-Up Form? Perhaps you want to try a new committee. Maybe you would like to resign from a committee. Here is your opportunity to do so on the committee form.
Education
Chair Dan Wells is looking for more Bus Ambassadors. The Education Concert season has begun at Powell Hall, and helping to welcome and safely guide students and chaperones into Powell Hall is an important and rewarding job. All you need is a good pair of shoes, a proper coat, and a smile, and you’re good to go. Dan could also use some assistance with scheduling later in the year. Please contact Dan Wells if you can help.
Instrument Playground is a very active committee right now and Chairs Jeff Kaplan and Jim Dodd need your support in volunteering for Symphony In Your School visits. VP Gerry Frankenfeld and Chair Jeff Kaplan will be working with the STL Symphony's Director of Education, Berakiah Boone, to establish the future schedule of visits. Jessica Ingraham, Youth Orchestra and Education Manager, is helping to arrange for professional cleaning and restoration of instruments.
Are you a member of the One & Done Committee? The SVA has received good vibes in St. Louis and other communities because of establishing this committee that “has tennis shoes will travel.” Chairs Linda Seibert and Patty Kaplan accept all assignments for this committee and have filled every one. Other SVA committees often request One & Done to supplement their committee rosters. Please check your calendars and find the time to say, “Yes!” when possible. One & Done has a reputation to uphold as being ready to help at a moment’s notice. If you are not a member, sign up for One & Done today. You will attend no meetings, accept assignments only when you are available, and rarely work more than two to three hours on an assignment. It's also a lot of fun!
