Alice Liu

Marquette High School

Alice Liu is a senior at Marquette High School. This is her third season as an oboist in the youth orchestra.

From the first time Alice picked up an instrument, she has been captivated by music. She started playing violin and piano when she was 6 and oboe a few years later. Although she has loved exploring all of these instruments, oboe is undoubtedly her favorite due to its gorgeous sound and all the memories she has made. In 2018, Alice was featured with her oboe on ESPN as a National Spelling Bee contestant (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-VBACToExc). She cherishes performing with her school band at regional and state competitions as well as playing for people in the community, including as a member of the 2022 All-National Honor Band, 2022 Missouri All-State Band, 2023 Missouri All-State Band.

Alice is thankful for all of her current and former instructors for their contribution to her musical journey. These include her middle school band directors Mr. Bob Wilhite and Mr. Jason Bergman, her high school band directors Mr. Christian Pierce and Ms. Kaylin Knost, her former oboe instructor Ms. Xiomara Mass, and her current oboe instructor Ms. Alyssa Wojdag. She also feels indebted to her parents and brother, Lawrence (a YO alumni), who have listened to her musical journey for nearly 10 years and are always there to cheer her on.

Besides oboe, Alice enjoys hiking, baking cookies, and listening to Taylor Swift.
